How does year-round school work in Wake County, NC? ›

The year-round system, which breaks the year down into four, nine-week quarters with three-week breaks in between, also can provide important flexibility for parents who work non-traditional schedules and allows families to take vacations at different times of the year.

In 37 middle and elementary schools in the district, home to the city of Raleigh, Monday, July 8, marked the first day of school, part of a year-round schedule that eschews the traditional lengthy summer break in favor of four nine-week quarters, with smaller breaks in between.

Students have periodic, short breaks rather than one long summer break. The year-round calendar simply spreads the 180 school days throughout the entire year. Students attending a year-round school are in school for 45 days and then have a 15-day break.

Students are encouraged to either go to breakfast if their parents' want them to or to go directly to their homeroom class. Daily announcements begin around 9:10 am. The official school day begins at 9:15 am. Any students arriving after 9:15 am must check-in, with their parent, in the office.
